'Being annoying is a fireable offense': Employee fails probation after questioning manager's repeated use of phrase 'circle back' in meeting

Some things just don't need to be done in a professional setting.

In a lot of jobs, it is for the best that the person we are at work and the person that we are elsewhere is slightly different. Taxing as it can be on our patience and our sanity, most workplaces are not well suited to us doing what we want and saying whatever's on our mind. Developing a work persona is a vital professional skill.

That being said, there are times at work when candor is the best course of action. Sometimes our colleagues need to know what we really think without it being dressed up in annoying, coded corporate speak. It is not a coincidence that these times tend to coincide with somebody handing in their notice. This is the kind of thing that is most likely to happen when an employee has reached the end of their goodwill for an employer, and can't wait to move on to something new.

There is the occasional rare person who can get away with saying and doing stuff at work that others can't, but unless you are really sure, it is best not to assume that this applies to you. Otherwise, you could face an unwelcome trip to HR and face some consequences that nobody wants to deal with at work.

  • An employee was tickled by the behavior of one of their coworkers, who was two weeks into the job. This man decided to speak up when they were having a meeting relating to quarterly goals, and their manager was speaking to them about the topic.

    While the boss was speaking, this colleague decided it was a good time to question why they were repeating a certain phrase as they presented. They didn't just leave things there, and what started as an innocent query ended up as something that they may have ended up regretting.

He got let go during his probation period today and I heard him ask HR if it was because of the circle thing.

  • Beth @alwaysjnov As embarrassing as it was for the boss, this is the kind of person you want around. They challenge assumptions, call out inefficiencies, and rock the boat. They won't always be right. But things will get done better. (Or, he's just an a hole.)

  • Andrew Lynch ❤ @andrewglynch Breaking news: aggressively trying to make your colleagues look stupid in front of other people is a poor career strategy when you're a part of a large org, a critical skill is being able to work with others to get things done, which generally speaking means people need to like you, want to work with you, want to help you there's a time and a place for disagreement and pushback, but it's not two weeks in when someone innocently uses a phrase you don't like
